Anomie (or Anomy) is a word coined by the famous sociologist, Durkheim, during the early part of the 20th century. He used the word to describe the sense of malaise or lostness that people may exhibit when societal norms are unclear. One of his popular works was entitled, "The Anomie of Affluence" which describes this phenomenon among those who suddenly come into a lot of money. They no longer understand what is expected of them and in such unfamiliar surroundings, they feel detached.

If you are still curious, keep your eyes on this blog. By the end of the semester, my final project will be posted on the topic. :-)

Thanks for your question.
