How many zeros in a billion?
The next time you hear a politician use the
word ‘billion’ in a casual manner, think about
whether you want the ‘politicians’ spending
YOUR tax money.
A billion is a difficult number to comprehend,
but one advertising agency did a good job of
putting that figure into some perspective in
one of it’s releases.
- A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
- A billion minutes ago, Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
- A billion hours ago was the Stone Age.
- A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
- A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.
While this thought is still fresh in our mind, let’s take a look at New Orleans. It’s amazing what you can learn with some simple division.
Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D), is presently asking Congress for
250 BILLION DOLLARS to rebuild New Orleans. Interesting number…
what does it mean?
A. Well… if you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans
(every man, woman, and child)
you each get $516,528.
B. Or… if you have one of the 188,251 homes in
New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787..
C. Or… if you are a family of four…
your family gets $2,066,012.
Now do the math yourself and figure out how much every man,
woman and child in the U.S. would get if we split among us,
the $800 Billion allocated for the Health-care bill*
*(which requires the formation of 118 new government agencies to manage).
How is your math?
Half a Century Later…
October 12th, 2009Now I see why we are called the human race. As we get older, we race faster to live life more fully. I’m racing to live life more today than I did ten or twenty years ago. And not necessarily anxiously; just more aware of the value of time as the hourglass runs out.
I feel sorry for the youth. They are still under the illusion they have a lifetime before them. I may have most of my lifetime behind me; but what lies ahead will be much better because I value more highly, the little that remains.
Speed doesn’t wear us down, friction does…
May 2nd, 2008It’s not the speed that kills us. It’s the wearing down action that friction plays. Many are living with gusto. They are moving at the speed of life without so many cares as some who plow ahead against so many self-imposed barriers. Most of these barriers are built up in the mind rather than in reality. Nevertheless, real or imagined, they must be overcome as well.
The science of superconductors has experimented with the use of ceramics that are supercooled and suspended by magnetic fields in order to drive force without friction. The theory of generating energy without friction underlies such research. Equate this with living a stress-free life.
I’ve heard it said that the only people who are without stress are in a coffin. This may be true or it may be a psychological defense mechanism to deal with the stress of thinking about “how” to live stress-free. :-0
Ancient scriptures speak of a “peace beyond understanding” (Philippians 4:7). If such a thing exists, it is not common in our world where everyone is seeking to understand the reasons behind everything. Perhaps the problem is that we live too much in the mind and not enough from the heart.
Perhaps the friction on our mind makes us smarter while the friction on our heart kills us. An old proverb says, “Above all things, guard your heart for from it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23).
Are we living a heart-felt life or a brain-stressed one?
The human race or Dead stop?
April 29th, 2008Eventually, your participation in the human race will come to a dead stop. Are you excited for that moment??
The general reaction to the question of slowing down appears skewed. It may be that we are flawed in our understanding of what ‘slowing down’ means and entails. Slowing down may not refer to speed as much as it does to » More: The human race or Dead stop?

School Lunches: How to Make Cafeteria Food Better for Kids and the Environment
My favorite subject in my mid-1960’s grade school – next to recess – was lunchtime! Remember school lunches; those hot, colorful dishes served on large plastic platters and a carton of milk on the side? Included in the super low price was the promise that you were receiving all the nutrients necessary for a healthy mind and body. You knew this because the head of the school cafeteria was a Nutritionist. Such a title guaranteed you the most balanced and carefully planned diet available anywhere. You felt sorry for those poor kids who could not afford the hot lunch program and had to bring a brown bag from home with some cold, soggy sandwich. How could those brown baggers’ mothers live with their conscience? Hot school lunches were on par with Airline food and Hospital meals. People in the know were planning and preparing menus every week. We’re talking about » More: Ecofriendly School lunches…
We are “Human Beings” (not ‘human doings’)
February 12th, 20081. “How deep the ruts of tradition and conformity!” (Thoreau, Walden, paragraph 6 of Conclusion)
The Simple Living movement recognizes the superficiality of present day society which, though formed with mankind’s happiness in view, has not succeeded in achieving it. Thoreau, who saw through the facade from nearly every angle, said it best when he penned, “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” (Economy, paragraph 9). His view of the modern world’s pursuit of luxuries was a “positive hindrance to the elevation of mankind.” (Ibid, paragraph 19). He had come to realize that ‘being’ was more important then ‘doing’ but that society had only framed a universe for the latter rather than the former. The Simple Living movement therefore, is interested in » More: We are “Human Beings” (not ‘human doings’)
